Pawpaw
Asimina triloba

The largest native fruit in North America. Beloved by Washington and Jefferson. Now almost impossible to find in a grocery store.
The pawpaw is the largest fruit native to North America, a custard-textured thing that tastes faintly tropical and grows through freezing winters anyway. It was once an American institution: Washington is said to have eaten it chilled, and Jefferson planted it at Monticello. For all that, you will not find one in an ordinary grocery store today.
